After waiting for two weeks, paying 70 dollars, and another 40 dollars in tax, I finally received the Audio Technica ATH-SJ5 Portable Headphones. Besides looking just sweet, it's very light and flexible. The cable is on the short side, but should provide enough length for any hot on-the-road mp3 player action. It's pretty comfortable, but it starts to push on my ears after about an our and a half. The headphones isolate well, but not one hundred percent, which is an advantage; especially in traffic, when you don't want to get mauled by a truck because all you could hear was "hit me baby one more time".
I listen mainly to metal, and the Audio-Technica ATH …read full review

Just received these headphones and plugged them in right away. My thoughts; surely they need some burn-in, to clear up the highs especially, but the bass is just... WOW, spot on, deep, punchy, heavy, fun and not too overly present.
I intended it mainly for rock, metal and everything beyond, and it does that perfectly - even out of the box it sounds great - and it will get better over time! …read full review

I got these from Audiocubes last year, and I must say I'm very happy with the sound quality. Certainly one of the very best in this price category with a lot of clarity and range. I'm no audiophile but trust me, you can definitely hear the difference if you're used to the Sony stuff that costs ~$55.
So the sound quality's great, and actually, so is the build quality. That's to say - the quality of the components is good, the plastic is sturdy and the paint (even though there's not much of it) doesn't scratch easily. Also, the cups seal you off from your surroundings pretty well, which is of course nice for various reasons.
What I don't really like is the s …read full review

I asked for these for Christmas after my trusty Koss UR29s broke. I wanted a better pair after having listened to my boyfriend's ATH-A500s. I needed something good sounding, inexpensive, portable, comfy, and sleek. These fit the bill. The highs are nice and crisp and the bass is pretty powerful. I got the silver ones, and they look STELLAR. The supraural earcups seal pretty well, but they do start to hurt after about an hour or two. This works fine for me, since I use them primarily between classes or at work. The cord is very, very short, which is good for on-the-go listening, but it can be annoying at work and home. They are very easily driven from mp3 pla …read full review

Sound quality-wise it's better than the earphones that comes prepackaged with your audio players. However, the Koss KSC75's which can be had for half its price sound similar.
The fit of the phone is average. I find that it clamps too tightly, even after many weeks of usage. Since these are supraaural, your ears will hurt after an hour or so. There's also a tendency for the headband to slip off unless it's adjusted to the point where it digs into my scalp.
The looks department is the only place where this pair of 'phones shines, but the looks aren't worth it IMHO. …read full review

Bought these two weeks ago, good sound
-quite comfortable, but they do begin to hurt after about 1-2 hours
-pretty light
-they can warm your ears up a little too much, I find I have to take them off to let some air in every once in a while :(
-good base and highs, but I feel that the mids a little lacking, more towards the highs, I just don't hear that front stage l was hoping for
-cord is nice and short, love the material
-they stick out to the sides more than I expected from the pictures, but they aren't bulky
-might not be the best portable headphones, when I walk sometimes I hear and feel the magnets shake a bit with my footsteps, which is a big l …read full review

I also recently purchased a pair of these headphones to replace my recently broken D66 Eggos, they have a fair bit more punch to them and are very comfortable to wear, they don't pinch and they encapsulate the ears just enough to block a large chunk of ambient noise.
This is my first venture into Audio-Technica products after purchasing 2 pairs of D66 Eggos, and thusfar I'm quite impressed, they fold down nicely, don't look overly gaudy and have just the right amount of bass for the sort of music I listen to.
Definitely something worth considering given the quality at this price point, I can honestly say I prefer them to the D66's. …read full review

The Audio Technica ATH SJ5 Portable Headphones are a midsize portable headphone that feature a smart stylish and flexible design which is lightweight and foldable in various orientations. They do a reasonable job of isolating you from outside noise and don't leak much either making them a great choice for portable use in situations where you don't want to disturb those around you. They are a little better than the Audio Technica FC7 in that respect.
These headphones sound great for their price. They have a slightly bass heavy tilt but otherwise provide excellent clarity and detail, along with a surprisingly good sound stage for a closed model.

Ah, the SJ5's.
I got those earlier this year, either in late January or early February. I was looking for the "ideal" portable headphone at around $50 US, and, well, I bought those.
A decision I've never regretted. They sounded FANTASTIC. Very detailed, crisp, good separation yet with a certain "togetherness". They are a good pair of headphones, and one listening session has convinced one of my friends to purchase them. He won't have to, because I'm giving him a pair for his birthday :)
I stuck with them for a few months before moving up the Audio Technica ladder and getting some AD900's. After listening to those, however, the SJ5's were never the …read full review

Bought this headphone a while back as a replacement for the AKG K81DJ to serve as my main portable can. The AKG cost about the same, but I never could get used to the thight grip and somewhat overpowering bass.
The AT is much better in those respects. The fit is very comfortable and the bass is much smoother and a tad better midrange. Isolation suffers a bit due to the looser grip but it is enough to provide a bit of annuation. Just don't expect to use them on a plane. You will be better off with a set of in-ear/canal phones.
Build quality and design is, as always with AT, top of the line. Quite a feat considering the relative low cost.
All in all a very …read full review

I rarely get satisfied with headphones I haven't listened to carefully before buying them. Once again I took a chance, often I end up cursing myself for having bought cans that look stylish but sounds like crap. The ATH-SJ5 was a great buy though since they offer a tight bass, with a good fit. the plastic approach have some disadvantages though. They will not work smoothly for DJing, unless it's in rather calm environment...If you want to have a headphone that could take the punishment of being tossed around and thrown in bages and such, the ATH-SJ5 will seem a bit to neat. On the other hand, they're perfect for that walk to work without the annoying sound o …read full review

I bought these to replace my Sony Eggo MDR-66SL, these are great! They do not clamp on my head as much as the Eggo, but still block out enough noise when I'm listening to music so that I don't have to turn up the volume way up. However, I wouldn't recommend these if you were going to go on a subway or some place VERY loud. As for sound quality, I'm no audiophile, but in my opinion, they're a good value for the price. Not as bassy as the AKG81DJ and a little bit clearer in detail. Compared to the Sony Eggo, these are just fine and decent. I love these phones, they collapse great for travel. As you can see from the rest of the reviews, these are a definite goo …read full review

Great cans.
Sleek looking, you wont stand out or get stares in public with these on.
The comfortable pleather earcups isolate decently well, and barely leak any sound even at moderate volume. These headphones are also easy to drive, and have a very short cord. Combine this with their durability, and they make awesome portable cans. They adapt very well to EQ, and unless I want a very balanced sound, I have an EQ setting on at all times.

I bought these a few weeks ago going on word-of-mouth - and I'm glad I did. Excellent cans for the price range, these sound like something that costs at least a hundred dollars more. I'm very impressed with these headphones, first the sound is impressive, good bass but not overdone, female voices are great and so is instrumentation. Sound stage is not perfect but as good as you're gonna find in this price range. They fold flat which makes for easy packing. They are comfortable for long periods of listening but since they are supra aural they do cause some discomfort eventually, for my ears it takes 4 hours before they begin to get a little uncomfortable. They look stylish (lets all admit that looks counts) and are easy to drive from a portable audio player. In this price range I can't think of any headphones that are better overall then …read full review

A friend told me about these headphones, and I was a bit skeptical at first, considering this is my first time ordering off from this website. It took four days to arrive, and just wow, these headphones are perfect, they produce great sound for the price, and it performed so much better than my old Sennheisers 130.

Very pleased with the SJ5s - they sound great out the box, much better already than the (more expensive) FC7s I purchased last year, and with a better build quality and lead. Bass is very tight, mids are solid and treble is not too harsh. Great value and wonderfully efficient service once again from Audiocubes. You have never let me down. …read full review

I bought these to compare to my AKG K81DJ. I got them just before AC started carrying them, and I must say, they are absolutely FANTASTIC for the price. Very nice clear, detailed bass, with some only very slightly rolled off highs. They seem to have the signature AT tipped upper mids, which a bonus in my book. The mids seem a bit more recessed than those of the K81DJ, but in my opinion it helps to add to their very good soundstaging.
They are much more comfortable than the K81, with a much less aggressive grip on the head. The cord is just the right length for portable use, which is my main usage for these cans.
So the verdict in comparison with the K …read full review
