Recently I purchased a nice pair of headphones to listen to music while at work. Unfortunately I could hear a lot of interference from my computer. Every time I minimized or maximized a window, or even moved the mouse, I heard buzzing. I purchased an inexpensive sound card with optical out but needed an amplifier that would accept optical. It was either this, or a low end receiver. Although this is almost as expensive as a receiver it is presumably higher quality and takes up much less space.

Finally an affordable headphone amp with optical input! This was the main reason for me to buy it. You could, of course, spend thousands of bucks to get great sounding speakers plus amp, but the room the speakers are situated is probably not right for the ideal sound - and you may not always sit on the right point to get the best possible stereo experience. Plus you have to take care of carpets and all that stuff and hi-fi-voodoo blah-blah ... In my set-up, active speakers (Sony SRS-ZP1000) do the job when the music is playing in the background.
