Pros: Light, clean sound, comfortable, great value.
Cons: Not for a basshead.
This review is written from the perspective of the Ad900 stock, no external amp or DAC to give readers an idea of what to expect if they buy these without an amp/DAC.
Packaging:
I was rather unimpressed at the packaging a pair of $400 MSRP headphones came with. They come in a cardboard box with a "door" which opens to display the headphones through plastic. It looks rather nice, but it leaves something to be desired. Included was a 1/4'' adapter and a plastic headphone stand. I expected that some extras would be included for the price, perhaps extra ear pads, but just …read full review

I recently got a pair of these, and I can say that I'm very very pleased, with how music sounds, now this is the way to listen to music! I was missing so much.
I'm no expert, I used to have a pair of sennheiser 228, and there's no comparison.. my senns look like some sort of toy now.
The instrument separation is great, the sounds r clear, the bass is tight but not boomy, so for the bassheads this is not the hphone u're looking for, for anyon else I totally recommend it! …read full review

just recieved them today , and i could not understand or justify why people would pay such a large amount of money for a set of headphones , but i recently brought the new AUZEN X-FI PRELUDE and thought i'd treat myself to an upgrade from my stealsound 5h , and man what a difference , sound quality in games are amazing with good directional positioning and even resonable bass , mp3's and ac3 while watching divx movies are crisp and clear , and overall a joy to the ears, the only downside is i will never appreciate cheap headphones again and will cost when replacments become necessary in the future.
Audiocubes have done me proud with quick delivery to the u …read full review

these headphones are great. i had to choose between these and the a900's or the senn hd595's. and i am perfectly satisfied with the choice that i made.
i use these with my auzentech x-fi prelude and my music sounds amazing. some ppl were saying that these heaphones are only good for jazz or acoustic music, but i listen mostly to rock (classic to heavy metal), and i have no complaints. although you can definately tell a difference when you listen to an acoustic track, its unbelievable.
the shipping only took a week from japan to canada, so i was quite pleased with that. although i was charged gst and pst plus a handling fee, but taht was expected.

Coming from a pair of 15 dollar headphones to these its amazing. I thought i would just use these for gaming because of the positional audio. But when i listened to music i was amazed, i went through all my music and heard things i've never heard in the song. I hear people say the bass is not as good as the a900. But the bass is really good deep and balanced i would say. And they are amazingly comfortable.
I would highly recommend these headphones to anyone wanting a high grade multi-purpose headphone.
Thanks to audiocubes great service! …read full review

What can I say? Soundstage, clarity, highs, mids and lows are all superb. I listen to a wide selection of music, and I have yet to find a genre which sounds bad on it. It also excels in movies and games with positional audio, delivering a deep and immersive experience. Bass heads might not like the AD900, but I find that the bass it delivers is tight and not bloated, and the bass actually extends quite deep. Although it offers little isolation compared to the A900 due to its open design, this trade-off is well worth it, since it helps the headphones sound more like speakers without the 'stuffy' sound that closed phones tend to deliver.

First thing I must say: these headphones are a bargain compared to other headphones of the same price/standard (thanks to Audiocubes for providing a low cost on these. If you listen to Jazz or any sort of light music, you'll easily be able to tell where the instruments are located, it's almost as if you could grab them in the air. If you are looking for headphones to play hard rock for example, I think you should get something else as these won't fill the common basshead as the bass is very neutral (not really a low point but it's a matter of taste I guess). The sound stage is very wide and the details are very clear, like most Audio Technica cans I'd say.

i like this headphone alot, i just upgraded from a sony mdr-v6 so im not hi-fi audiophile guy. but the difference is pretty big, the highs sound really clear and the sound stage is very very big.
i use it to play games and i can almost locate where everyone is, ( except once where a guy got up on the wall and put sticky bombs where i was, this is playing team fortress 2 by the way) the only thing that i don't like about it is that the bass is kind of lacking and that it wasn't as pretty as i had expected it to be, but still overall a great headphone and i think it is worth the money. I would recommend these headphones for someone looking for a good headphon …read full review

This headphone is very smooth and detailed.
A dedicated amp is not necessary since its easy to drive but does improve the sound.
The bass is deep but not overpowering and its suitable for most types of music in particular jazz and acoustic music. I find its works very well with femal vocals.
One word of warning! This headphone is big and takes a few days for me to get use to it.
It took less than a week to shipped directly from Japan. …read full review

Overall these are great headphones. I can use them straight from my iPod or computer and they work fantastic. An amp will see benefits to these cans but is not vital by any means. Gaming is a treat and they are well rounded for music but I find them best for acoustical, women's vocals, jazz and related genres. For rock I bought a pair of D2000's to compliment these. The AD900 has a neutral bass and is not anemic by any means but it is definitely not a strong point. Therefore I need different cans for rock, however songs with lots of screaming guitars do really well on this can because of the airiness it provides. These are very comfortable and they feel very …read full review

First off, I'm a mid-fi type of guy. At home I have some mid-range Magneplanars and a all-in-one NAD cd/receiver/tuner.
This headphones sound like the Magneplaners to my ear. Airy, detailed, feels like the musician is in the room, lacking a bit of bass (fixed by using iTunes EQ...gasp!), very comfortable on my big ears.
One worry I had is that co-workers would be bothered by the sound coming out of these open cans. No problem so far. We have pretty solid cubes with wood walls...if you are sitting right next to someone (like on an airplane) they will hear them.
Right out of the box the AD-900's were a little piercing, but I burned them in for a week …read full review

These headphones are simply fantastic.
Of course, my views might be a bit skewed, since I purchased those coming from the lowly ATH-SJ5's, but the AD900's simply blew my mind.
They sound exactly like they feel: big and warm. I'm running them straight out of my laptop's headphone out, so I know they can sound much, MUCH better, but they're still stunning as it is. I've listened to them for a few hours a day ever since I got them, and it's always hard to get them off my ears... I just can't stop listening to them! They bring everything alive!
The pads, however, to tend to get a bit warm, especially since we're in the middle of summer, but it's not muc …read full review

Audio-Technica's ATH-AD900 headphones are pure bliss for your ears.
A key feature for me was their clarity - every song has subtle elements you wouldn't otherwise hear. Crisp highs, clear vocals, clean lows. These headphones are the reason I converted all my CD's to FLAC ... MP3's just don't do them justice. Careful: they WILL make you listen to your entire music collection again.
The AD900’s can easily produce an enormous amount of sound – without an amp (that’s how I’m running them). Bass isn’t overpowering, and if you really want a pair of subwoofers strapped to your ears look elsewhere.
Putting on the AD900’s, with their fancy 3D wing support s …read full review

These sound strikingly similar to their more expensive counterparts, although they lack some bass depth and definition. Also, their highs are a bit rolled off, and the midrange is a tad recessed. Overall, though, for the money these cannot be beat. …read full review
