Solid canal phones for the price. They have good range and clarity that belies their sub $100 price tag. Reasonable bass too - though this is perhaps one of their biggest weaknesses. There are mods to address bass "leakage" but I have not tried these.
I would give them 4 stars, except Sony makes an almost identical pair of earphones (MDR-EX85) for considerably less $$. These have even less base, and are made with somewhat cheaper materials, but their sound signature is very similar (they use identical drivers). In fact, the EX85s are slightly more comfortable (due primarily to them being of lighter weight) and perhaps even sound a bit clearer - more preci …read full review

Although these earphones aren't that bad, I was happier with my MDR-EX70SL. Personally the fit of the EX90 just isn't as good as the EX70, resulting in more noise from the enviremont than when I had the EX70s and the EX90 sound is (in my opinion) just not as "full" as the sound I got from the EX70s. Plus the fact that the EX70 is lighter to wear, I'm just a bit dissapointed about the pricier EX90. …read full review

Excellent! Earbuds with a huge range, very controlled in the lows, they definitely have a very even monitor sound (very tight bass). Comfort wise, they are not the most comfortable ear buds I have ever used, due to the solid metal driver sitting outside of the ear canal, but I've grown accustomed to the feel (it's worth it for the sound and price) Speaking of solid metal, these things are built like tanks, yet have the weight of feathers (extremely well built) All in all, highly recommended! …read full review

These earphones are currently my favorite. I've always been impressed by the fit of Sony's, and these feel comfortable in my ears for hours at a time. More importantly, they do not pop out of my ears, they stay secure in my ears and do not come out, unless taken out.
The sound is great. While the volume is a bit lower than many earphones, the clarity and range of sound is excellent. The bass is far better than most in-ear canal earphones, but the bass is very controlled... not too strong and booming as on other Sony models.
The fact that they do not totally block out sound is a plus, not a minus. It allows me to hear ambient sounds, which is important whil …read full review

These earphones are amazing. The good quality of sound and building aluminum pieces are beautiful. And I am really, really impressed with good quality of Audiocubes services! The handling, shipping (it took only 4 days to travel from Japan to my house in Brazil), support, everything! Now I know where to buy audio stuff when I need it!! …read full review

I'm so glad that i bought these set of earphones. after countless hrs of doing research over the internet ie. browsing through forums, reading buyers reviews i think these wonderful little things lives up to what its expected and more. if you want acoustic detail full of rich mid and hi this is the perfect item for its price. i am sort of a bass freak and do prefer the low of the mdr-71 but thats just me. i think over all this is a well balanced and highly detailed when it comes to hearing your favorite track or other sorts of media. and these are import only.....luckily for me i had found these just in time to cancel my order with amozon for the ex90lp. aud …read full review

The EX90SL is a very interesting piece of headphone. The first time I put them on, the sound wasn't very impressive for its price tag. After reading some reviews online, many said that you need to run it for a significant amount of time (like 300 hrs) to appreciate its full potential. I decided to try it out and ran it 10 hrs for 3 days for a total of 30 hrs. The bass, mid, and highs all became noticeably more distinct and clear! I hope the sound improves as I spend more time running it. For those of you who are disappointed by this earphone, try running it for a while, you will be surprised. …read full review

I have previously used the MDR-EX71 and 81. The 71s were good, the 81s even better. So the MDR-EX90s should be better yet, right?
The bass is tighter, mids are clearer, and highs almost \"sparkle.\" But these headphones fall well short of their predecessors on comfort and noise-blocking.
Whereas the 71s and 81s could be worn all day and forgotten, because they were SOOOO comfy, these just plain HURT. Trying to position these for both sound quality and comfort will cause sore sports in your ears.
The reduced noise-blocking nullifies the added bass of the larger drivers over the preceeding models. These work great in a bedroom or office, or on a quiet …read full review

Utterly awesome! The headphones really are ridiculously comfortable (and to think I used to believe that my previous MDR-EX81SLs couldn't be bettered?!) and the sound reproduction really is extraordinary. I've heard things through these that my pretty good stereo can't reproduce as well. Although they're not noise cancelling, they're so comfortable and fit so snugly that they block out most chatter on my commute in to work and I can leave them in for huge periods of time without them getting remotely uncomfortable (altough to be fair, my 81s were pretty similar in that respect). They look fantastic and the case is excellent. I can completely recommend them w …read full review

The sound and openess that come from EX90's are incredible. I have heard music revealed on Sony's HD5 and RH10 players I have never heard before. These earphones are definately Hi-Definition for your ears. The bass is not as bloated as with the EX51 & EX71's. With the EX90's the tonal balance is much better compare to other EX models. The only thing I dislike about the pair is they are not comfortable for long periods of time like other EX models, which you can wear for hours on end; but then you don't want to wear these as long anyway due to the fact that they are louder and you will lose you hearing as a result. …read full review

Luckily I got mine before the initial shortage after launch! I want to state straight off, I'll be comparing these to the MDR-EX71SL's a lot, since these are the upgraded version of the EX71's.
These earphones are indeed good, not in a blow-your-socks-off way, but pretty good. if you have the EX71's already, just imagine them louder, with better defined (read less boomy) bass, and more importantly, have much better mids and vocals, then these EX90SL's do just that. You'll pick up more sounds with EX90's where you didn't notice on the EX71's. They sound good out of the box, and improve after initial breaking in, though this will vary between evey pair.

I have them and they are good, my reference is the STAX portable headset.
Be aware though, they are open earphones, so people next to you can hear your music. Even in a somewhat noisy environment, if you like you music between medium and loud.
The design is nice and far different then any previous SONY models. The finishing is sublime. Each plug is build of an estimated 15-20 parts. You get 3 different adaptors for fitting and has a L shaped audio plug.
The SONY models which come close are the Qualia EX-Q1 and Bio-cellulose ones(MDR-E888 range). Be aware though the SONY Bio-cellulose models are difficult to produce and sound quality of each pair ca …read full review
