If you are after clean non fatiguing headphone sound, these are the phones to try. These blow away some Shure EP3's that I have. And yes while they can't compare to full size Stax's, they give you at least a sense of what natural sound is about. Due to the size of the SRM-001 driver they are best suited to stationary listening.
Pros
- that wonderful natural Stax sound
- extended natural bass
- smooth smooth sound, totally unfatiguing. You can listen at low volumes with fidelity
- do not block ambient sound - so no need to remove them in the office!
- minimal cable noise so you can walk with them (unlike the Shure's)
- much more comfortable than othe …read full review

Got these so fast from Japan to LA I was blown away. Thanks Audiocubes.
Sound is quite interesting, different from all my other headphones and good enough to make me want to try regular Stax. Earpieces are a little uncomfortable. As others have said, extension on highs could be better but detail is awesome. Very fun portable phones.
They really benefit from a wall adapter. You need a 4.5v 300ma (can use more will only draw that much) positive polarity adapter. Many universal adapters will work. With adapter you get better extension on highs and lows. …read full review

Let's start with the highs. It is not the most extended high frequencies you can hear, but the quality--the shimmer of the cymbals and the glassy notes of the piano--is very good. I wish there was more extension but I could live with it.
Then there's the midrange. This is the forte of this headphone system. Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, & other well recorded female voices simple sound superbly excellent. Midrange is clear, smooth, and very easy on the ears. Kenny G also shines here.
Now the bass. This is the weakness of this headphone. It only gives you an "implied" deep bass. It leaves a lot to be desired as far as extension is conce …read full review

The sound is great. Sounds like the music is coming from inside your head. They are very light weight and comfortable. There is no problem with them staying in your ears either. It takes a little getting used to having the ear speaker actually fit in your ear. When the sound is low you can easily hear sounds through the ear piece. The shipping was as promised and quick by FedEx with short hold up in customs. Audio Cubes to their time processing the order, it took them ten days before the order was shipped, which in my not so humble opinion is way too long. I cannot think of a better sounding head phone. They almost match the big Stax ear speakers which I als …read full review

Only 15 reviews, why aren’t there anymore?
I’m assuming that because there are only 15 reviews here that only 15 people have brought these headphones form audiocubes.
The thing is that there should be more people buying these.
Yes the first hour I could have gladly shipped them back to audiocubes, but I let them burn in, and they are now singing.
The main thing to understand is that Stax is not $239 pair of headphones. It is a full headphone system, including a headphone amp and the headset. It’s very easy to forget that, when thinking about buying these.
DO NOT BELIEVE THE REPORTS THAT SUGGEST THE BASS IS LACKING IN ANY WAY.
That's the m …read full review

I waited to write a review on this system so that I could get used to the Stax sound and I am very pleased that I did.
I am listening to the Stax SR-001 MKII System through my portable RIO cd player and my 5.5 gen iPod and I can't say enough good things about this headphone/amp combination.
They sound very natural and are easy to take on the road. While they don't provide the best isolation they accel at everything else.
I don't hesitate to recommend this system to anyone, for the price, it sounds fantastic.
Thanks for the great customer service and the safe arrival of my product Audio Cubes.

I needed a portable solution that sounded great, so I looked to these. The sound is definitely amazing. If you haven't tried an electrostat system this is the perfect place to start. There is a warmness that can't be found anywhere else, and is definitely present in the sr-001. Things were light and airy. The presentation was crisp, precise, yet not too analytical as to appear bright. It's not a fatiguing sound as a lot of IEM's can tend to have. The bass however was not that impacting.
They provide good isolation, but leak sound because they are open.
Battery lasts only 4 to 5 hours max. Definitely invest in an AC adapter, as it also helps to tighten …read full review

My grado labs SR80s were starting to die on me, so I picked up a set of these stax sr-001 mk2s. I've heard a lot about the electrostatic sound, and wanted a piece of it for myself.
Well, the sound definitely did not dissapoint. Despite having to manage jumbles of cable, and feed it new batteries almost daily (I listened to it that much), these guys are pretty much the best sounding audio gear I've ever had my hands on.
What *did* dissapoint, however, is that 2 months after I had these, they died on me. No led lights when I turn the knob, battery change did nothing, and they were never dropped or exposed to moisture. Damn. :( …read full review

i bought an srm-001 mk2 for travel with an ipod. the system is very warm sounding & easy to listen to for long periods. it is lightwieight, runs on 2 aa batteries with limited playing time but accepts a wall wart. train & plane isolation is not the best but normal isolation is pretty good. i did not like this system the 1st time i heard it because i did not have a chance to position the ear pieces which sit on top of the ear canal. it takes a few minutes practice to find the sweet spot position. now i instinctlively know where to position the ear pieces. i think the units sounds very good. it's light very weight, small & easily packable. it's size & weight m …read full review

The Stax SRM-001 is without a doubt electrostatic to the core. I am a college student that music fortunatly plays a very important part in my life. My home system consists of Magnepan MMG's driven by Rotel equipment, great for the music that I love, such as Diana Krall, Boney James, Chris Botti, Sarah Brightman, Keiko Matsui, James Taylor, Candy Dulfer, Ottmar Liebert, Norah Jones, Loreena McKennitt, and the occasional Madonna. I know good sound reproduction when I hear it, and this headset does NOT turn tail.
I was looking for a small headset that gave me the lions share of the performance of my maggies, in a package that I could take to school with me, …read full review

i bought this stax in 2003 june, and i am still enjoying it with my ipod mini.
recently i purchased an ipod shuffle. it is exceedingly tiny! as a result i am able to use my stax a lot more conveniently than before. i love the combination with stax sr-001 mkII system. the combination of the two units was not at physically bigger than the larger ipods, and the sound is quite pleasent -- airy. …read full review

Phenomenal unit - mostly. It does have some issues however, which I will promptly address.
First, some people complained of a rolled-off treble, and this is sometimes true. When I first hooked this up to either my reference system or my portable, the treble was VERY rolled off from 16KHz onwards. I was very dissappointed, and thought of returning the unit for an Etymotic ER-4P - which is also excellent by the way - but then I had a thought: what if the cheap interconnect that I was using at the time was responsible for the rolled-off treble? So I bought a Kimber 1-foot mini-to-mini, and immediately upon hooking it up to my portable, I noticed a HUGE impro …read full review

Sonically these earphones are very good. They have a way of dissecting and pulling appart the blobs of music into distinct instruments and have a tone that you can only get through Electrostatics. In terms of sound I give them a 5 (especially at this price...)
Please note that batteries seem to affect the amplifier greatly and using cheap alkalines seemed to have a detrimental effect on them. Generally I found that using an ac adapter seems to give the amplifier the power it needs to give a more "dynamic" and "open" presentation.
The real detriment to these headphones is comfort. I can not wear them for as long as I would like. My ears are sore after a …read full review

I have had these gorgeous earspeakers before and sold them...what a mistake, whilst my little Sony E888 buds were good, they are no match for the Stax SR001s.
The clarity particularly with strings, voices & wind instruments is astonishing. The there is the depth of soundstage, no muddiness, great detail and speed in tracking the signal.
They are light, quite robust and very portable.
The best way to travel by train. They are simply superb. …read full review

Excellent product, perfect for someone starting out in electrostatic phones who wants to find out what they are like without paying a high price.
If you like these enough you can move on to the various Stax full-size products. Otherwise you are getting an excellent portable unit which can be used with portable equipment or which is good enough to complement regular home audio equipment.
Excellent service. This was shipped to the USA in a little more than a week. …read full review

I have been enjoying my Stax SR-001 MKII for almost two months now. I am quite satisfied with its sound. It is so defined and airy. Nothing sounds mushed up or muddied...
Other users at other review sites have commented that the sound was thin and that the high frequency roll-off was too steep. However, I found non of that a problem to my ears. I found the audio reproduction smooth and well balanced across the audible range...
I power the SR-001 MK II with a pair of PowerEx NiMH rechargable batteries by MAHA Energy, and I have been able to enjoy using the unit for almost 6 hours. I have even made myself a battery pack with 4 NiMH recharg …read full review

I have had these headphones for less than a week and
already I can't live without them ! I have had and used
many different brands of electrostatic and dynamic headphones including Stax and Etys but these phones have
the smoothest midrange of any that I have ever used - the
kind that makes you turn your head thinking that the sound
is in the room somewhere. High freq - 16 khz and above
seems to be abit rolled off, but well matched to portable cd
players and radios. Batteries - 2 AA size don't last very long
so rechargables are recommended. The headphone itself is
lightweight and comfortable but takes a few tries to insert
into my ears properl …read full review

These are amazing electrostatic earphones. I have many pairs of headphones such as HD580, AKG K501, Grado and Etymotic (amazing earphones too!) to compare with (all powered by headphone amp).
While dynamic headphones give faster, clearer, tighter sound, these stax provide warmer, fuller, but yet detailed sound. The point that stax blows dynamic phones away is Midrange!!!. They provide fullest midrange I have ever heard from headphones. They also sound more live than dynamic ones. Don't worry, they give enough bass for you to enjoy. It sounds really different and in very interesting way. You have to hear by yourself. The only drawback is battery life.
